General Math Stuff

Linsley - Mathematics & Computer Science-  Heaps of maths links and search engines
SCORE Mathematics Many useful sites.
Gopher links to many Math lessons  This has a list of math activities by grade
A page that links to everywhere- math lessons etc...
Chesskids Academy *Students of all ages can access these easy-to-understand lessons that teach the basic strategies of chess. There are online line lessons, offline lessons to download (you need to load a special font on our computer), and free interactive quizzes.
UBuyACar: Not only a lesson in math, but also an appropriate lesson for high school students in real-life budgeting. They must assess what kind of new car they can afford based on yearly salary, using several excellent resources and guidelines, an assessment checklist, and strategy suggestions. They will also consider what it means to afford a car. Also available as PDF format.
Checkbook Math: Students are assigned their own checkbooks with this ongoing math and budgeting activity, with real-world applications. You can tailor this lesson plan to create a monthly lesson or even a weekly effort, depending upon how much time you have.

Improving Deductive Reasoning Skills: Problem-solving skills very early materialize into a necessary function of ongoing mathematical success. Students will parti- cipate in highly creative activities, starting a la Sherlock Holmes, to improve their own deductive reasoning abilities.

Elementary (Primary) Maths

The following lesson plans come from C L A S S R O O M F L Y E R Sponsored by The Learning Company's School Division

Hands-on Math for the Elementary ClassroomTried and true math lessons in integers, data compression, building symmetric solids, making an astrolabe, and many others. Students will really enjoy this hands-on approach to learning math.

Adding Fractions This sample chapter and lesson on fraction addition is from Don Cohen's book, Calculus By and For YoungPeople . . . a special challenge that students can master, and feel great about accomplishing it!

Metric Conversions Upper elementary students will play a board game to learn and practice metric conversion. You can download a ClarisWorks or Acrobat file, or simply print the board pattern on the web page. The only other materials needed are die and markers.

Games on graphs Besides providing several games that students can actually play on graphs, this site also introduces activities which students can explore in a problem-solving approach, using patterns, functions, graphs, shapes, etc.

Tips for Teaching Maths Teachers offer effective strategies for warming up students, making thought processes clear and offering accessible and lucid presentations.

Toothpick Geometry What better way to understand triangles than to have your students make various types with toothpicks!

Three Dimensional Shapes Using architecture as an example, students will identify and then build a 3 dimensional model home, employing cones, cubes, etc.

Origami Lessons Now that your students are focusing on geometry, have them try this fun application--origami! Make a crane with triangles and rectangles, or "yakko".

World of Escher Is your class cutting out shapes and rearranging them for tessellations? What better site to visit than the World of M.C. Escher to take a look (or two or three or more!) at a master shape designer!

Mathematic Games Card tricks, geometry magic, and calculation wonders all make up this bundle of "tricks"--all based on mathematic principles. Your students might just see math in a new way!

Internet Mathematic Workbook This is a handy-dandy workbook that you can use every day--either in your classroom, or to create homework assignments for students to work on at home. It's available in either hardcopy (printable) or interactive format. Graded from K through 6, it provides a math database: drills of skills by grade and level, of 5 - 10 minute exercises, with several exercises available for each topic.

Challenging Mazes Here's a way to reward the students who finish all their worksheets in class with time to spare! Print out these wonderul mazes from the Learning Company, and you may just inspire all of your students to get finished on time!

Manipulatives for Upper Elementary Using geoboards, tangrams, color tiles, blocks and cubes, etc. can often make math more meaningful for students. From this teacher in Alberta comes a set of 18 lesson plans in which to incorporate manipulatives for grades 4 to 6.

Primary Math Enrichment From Britain, this site provides a rich resource in math activities, problems, lessons, and games. They also have a kid's magazine, a free math club, and a bulletin board. You'll find that here they really like math (and shouldn't we all?) !

Secondary Maths

Exercises in Math Readiness for University Study: Here are some practice exercises for college prep. or entrance exams. Topics cover mental arithmetic, algebra (I & II), trigonometry, logs & exponents, set theory, and theory components. Exercises are categorized under basic, moderate and advanced--though if one was to use this database for test prep., advanced would be the one to go with.

Math in Daily Life: The Annenberg Project comes up with some wonderful, practical, and educational exhibits. This one is too good to pass up, since, just as surely as it teaches and reinforces math concepts, so also does it teach valuable life skills to high schoolers. Not only this, but the real magic is that these lessons are never dry. Starting with the premise that math is a universal language and thus affects our communication and decision-making skills, it offers concrete and stimulating examples. The categories cover all facets of life, and almost everyone will find a topic to sustain their interests, from the odds on investing or playing the lottery, to facts and fallacies on banking, to the exponential possibilities in both population growth and compound savings, to even home decorating or cooking. Activities are available with each topic.

Cast your vote! Unit on Statistics: Now is a great time to be using this unit. If you cannot incorporate it immediately however, you may want to consider preparing it for use when students return in September, and election time then only two months away. Students will cast their votes on polling, media, and candidates in order to arrive at the Statistics exhibit on polling and elections. Covered are random sampling and error, and can view the results of their votes and the initial polling at the end of the lesson.

On-line Calculators: The main site here boasts over 10,000 calculators online! You might want to check the main index for your own use (taxes, roofing, carpeting...you name it!) but this particular page offers a vast array of online calculators for just about every and any function in mathematics. Scroll down for more math reference resources, from conversion facilitators to math history and more.

Geometry

Fine Dining in the Fourth Grade Geometry and fractions: what do they to do with restaurateurs? Learn exactly what here, in a fun and educational unit where students must set up a restaurant and serve a fine meal! This is a 10 day unit, with evaluations and follow-up activities included. PDF file.

Geometry in Motion: This interactive site contains many pages of geometry exercises, which can be used with online graphics. Try Congruent Triangles, the Folded Circle, Van Shooten's Ellipse, etc.Scroll to page bottom for PDF lessons on investigating equal areas, problem solving, etc.

Circles of Light: The Mathematics of Rainbows At the end of these lessons, the high school student will be able to give a geometric explanation of why a rainbow appears to have the shape of an arc. Lessons, diagrams, experiments are all included.

Geometry Problems of the Week: Try these problems with your students; they are tantalizing, challenging and fun! Check out the archives for more geometry problems. Submit your answer online as a class, or by single student.

Synergetic Geometry in Images and Animations From Richard Hawkins, some excellent animations of 3D geometry--great for classroom presentations!

Classification of Geometric Patterns:: These lessons look at classification of repeated patterns and symmetry, with a Teacher's Guide, Teacher's Resources and Student Lessons.

Interactive Geometry Gallery: This program runs with Java. Fractalina is a program for making fractals, while Franimate animates your fractals! Scroll down for the explanations behind the fractal programs, as well as further reading.

Polyhedron Models:This site will provide a primer on polyhedron construction, with tips and techniques.

Geoview! You can download this 3D Visualization Software for free. Geomview is software designed for manipulating and viewing 3 dimensional objects. Instruction manual, support and a tutorial are all available here. From the Geometry Center Projects.

Quadratica You can download this free program (for Mac OS7) to help your students solve the x variable in quadratic equations, and to solve systems of equations.
